Veils are the trademark of a bride. I recently had a bride ask why brides wear a veil in the first place, which caused me to investigate. I began reading a book entitled "The Wedding Book: The Big Book for Your Big Day" by Mindy Weiss. The book contains everything you can think of for weddings, and there in the center, was my history of the wedding veil.
"The Greeks thought that the veil protected the bride from evil forces. Then in Europe, where arranged marriages were so common, veils were used to prevent grooms from changing their minds when they got down the isle. They were not allowed to see their bride until they lifted the veil after 'I do'." That is my favorite part of the veil's history. I feel a little sorry for those poor grooms, but everyone likes a little surprise in life. "The American history of the veil arrises from a story when George Washington's nephew walked by a window, and was enchanted by a lovely woman behind a lace curtain. That woman, Nellie Curtis, wore a lace veil to their wedding so that she could honor the moment that they fell in love."
Whenever you are thinking veil vs. no veil, remember how crazy and romantic the history of the veil is. Even if you don't like the idea of a veil on your wedding day, hopefully this small collection of stories can at least let you laugh about it.
